A road older than the wall, a wall older than the trees
The street predates the aqueduct by 350 years — Via Aurelia was laid down in 241 BC, one of Rome's oldest consular roads, running all the way to Pisa. The arches came later: Trajan's aqueduct, 109 AD, carrying water 40 kilometers from Lake Bracciano, later restored by a pope and renamed for him too. Two empires' worth of infrastructure, and the pines in front of it are the newest thing in the frame by two thousand years.
