# A family, branding themselves as everyone's friend

A dove, an olive branch, three fleurs-de-lis in gold on wine-dark red — but the shield isn't just decoration. The Pamphilj built it around a translation of their own name: *pan*, everyone; *philos*, friend. Everybody's friend, they called themselves, then carved a dove to prove it, right as one of their own became Pope. Gold and wine — Rome's own colors, worn by a family that wrote its own reputation into stone. RR
